The power of N-ACETYL to boost the immune system

The pandemic renews in supporting your immunity. In the second of this series, with Maria’s expertise as an Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) practitioner we look at how can you support your immune system in light of the Coronavirus:

“Continuing this series, I look at supporting your immunity through the power of N-ACETYL CYSTEINE N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the supplement form of cysteine, which is an amino acid that helps the body to make and use health protective antioxidants.

NAC promotes glutathione production in the body – glutathione is a master antioxidant that has been shown to support the immune system. Glutathione can help to protect the lungs against pathological conditions and provide some viral protection. In a very recent (2020) controlled clinical study of 262 primarily elderly subjects, glutathione significantly reduced flu-like episodes and days of bed confinement.

How can you increase your levels of NAC? NAC itself isn’t available from foods, but cysteine is, and you can make small amounts of NAC from those foods.

So, look to start increasing your intake of foods such as chicken, turkey, duck, free range eggs, good quality cheese and plain yogurt, sunflower seeds, beans & pulses, and oats.”
