Selenium and how it can support your immune system
Coronavirus has made many of us review our health and ask what can we do to improve our immunity during a pandemic? In the lucky (!) thirteenth instalment of this series, with Maria’s expertise as an Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) practitioner we look at how can you support your immune system in the days of the Coronavirus:
“Continuing this series, I look at Selenium’s Immune Supportive powers.
Selenium is an essential mineral, which it must be obtained through your diet. Selenium acts as a powerful antioxidant, meaning it can help prevent damage to your cells, including those of your immune system.
Studies have shown that increased levels of selenium in the blood are associated with enhanced immune responses, whilst a deficiency in selenium has been linked with a slower immune response.
The good news is that because this is a ‘trace’ mineral it is only needed in small amounts to be protective to your health and just 3 Brazil nuts a day can provide a good amount!
Seafood such as oysters, halibut, sardines, fresh tuna, quality red meat and eggs are also good sources.”
