How Beta-glucan can support your immune system
The ever-looming worry of contracting Coronavirus has led many of us to look for ways to support immunity. In the fifth of this series, with Maria’s expertise as an Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) practitioner we look at how can you support your immune system in light of the Coronavirus:
“Continuing this series, I look at the immune power of Beta Glucan.
Beta-glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides (long chains of carbohydrate molecules) that are produced by bacteria, yeast, fungi, and many plants. They are a type of soluble fibre found naturally in cereal grains such as oats, yeast, and certain mushrooms such as shitake, and usually sold as a supplement.
A wealth of research shows that beta glucans can act as immunomodulators, which mean they can trigger a cascade of events that help regulate the immune system and make it more efficient. Although there is never a single magic bullet when it comes to supporting things like immune health or fighting disease it’s exciting to know about these immune-helping superstars and how to increase them in your diet, as they can play a significant role in helping your body to fight respiratory infections and other diseases.
So, how can you get more beta-glucans into your day? Increase foods such as whole oats, barley, and rye, baker’s yeast, and reishi, maitake and shiitake mushrooms. I highly recommend Mushrooms 4 Life mushroom supplements.”
